Jesus Rose From the Dead.

[0:05] Go ahead and have a seat. [0:06] Welcome to Village Church. [0:08] If this is your first time here, my name is Steve. [0:10] I’m one of the pastors here at Village Church and as always, I’m thankful and grateful [0:13] to see each and every one of you. [0:16] If you have a Bible, go ahead and open it to Luke 24.

[0:19] If not, that’s okay. [0:20] It should be on the screens behind me. [0:22] I never really know what they put on there, but it’s a lot of trust that I put in people [0:26] that they’re actually putting the verses behind me on the screen. [0:29] But today we’re celebrating, of course, Easter and I don’t think that’s news to any of you. [0:35] I’ve been a part of 36 Easter egg hunts now because I have small children.

[0:40] We’ve died, I think, seven dozen eggs that I wasn’t allowed to scramble. [0:45] And so, you know, I’m surrounded by pastels, so it’s very, it’s wonderful. [0:49] It’s very calming experience. [0:52] But when we get beyond all of the familial celebrations that we have coming into a church [1:00] this morning, I hope you realize that we believe that there is more to this than just the [1:06] festivities that surround as enjoyable as all of them are.

[1:10] We’re dealing today as Christians with the resurrection of Jesus Christ. [1:16] And of course, I want you to understand that the reason that I’m up here, the reason that [1:20] week in and week out I preach is because I believe that Jesus physically rose from the dead. [1:28] And I believe that that is of great consequence. [1:32] I believe that because Jesus rose from the dead, there are some serious implications, [1:39] not just for me, but for every one of us.

[1:42] I believe that because he rose from the dead, that reality must change the trajectory of your life. [1:50] I believe that it is the fundamental issue as to how you face every single day. [1:59] And if you’re in here and you either A, the jury is still out on whether you think Jesus [2:05] physically rose from the dead, or B, you’ve made the decision, yeah, I’m here because [2:10] someone made me come here. [2:11] I’m here because of, I don’t know why I’m here.

[2:15] But I don’t think Jesus really rose from the dead. [2:17] I don’t think that he is the God of my life. [2:21] My hope this morning is that I can convince you otherwise, and my great hope for you is [2:27] that you will experience the love of God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ in an unparalleled [2:33] way today, that will change your life forever. [2:35] Because I believe it will.

[2:37] If Jesus rose from the dead, then he is God. [2:43] If he did not rise from the dead, then he is really no more important than any other [2:50] historical figure of great consequence. [2:53] And so we are dealing with a very important question, but one thing that you have to admit [2:56] is that Jesus is probably the most important figure in the history of the world. [3:01] He certainly has to be, at least in our era, the most controversial figure in the history

[3:07] of the world. [3:08] There has really been no other person to ever exist where the debate as to whether [3:13] or not that person is God has lasted for well over 2,000 years now. [3:20] You can’t really say that about anyone else. [3:23] He impacted history in a way that no one else has impacted history, and it’s all because [3:28] of this one day.

[3:31] Now it isn’t that Jesus rose from the dead today. [3:34] It changes every day. [3:36] It changes every year. [3:37] There is some nerd out there right now that is like, I’m going to tell you. [3:40] But it just changes every year, and I don’t get that. [3:43] But look in Luke 24.

[3:44] I want to read an actual accounting, and the book of Luke is written from really a journalistic [3:51] standpoint where he is trying to get much of the detail right. [3:54] And he says in verse 1, on the first day of the week at early dawn, they went to the tomb [4:00] taking spices they had prepared. [4:02] Now that’s an important verse. [4:04] And here’s what that’s setting up for us.

[4:06] These people, these women, taking these spices to the grave expect to find something. [4:13] And what they expect to find without getting too graphic is a decomposing body. [4:19] And the reason that we know that is because in that era, they didn’t really have all [4:25] of the things that we have to keep you from smelling the stank. [4:29] And so they were taking spices which would have been a very powerful type of potpourri [4:34] to cover the smell of a decomposing dead body.

[4:39] And so we know that these women expected to find a dead Jesus. [4:47] It says in verse 2, they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. [4:53] But when they went in, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. [4:58] Now while they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling [5:03] apparel. [5:04] And as they were frightened, as you and I would be, and bowed down their faces to the

[5:09] ground, the men said to them, why do you seek the living among the dead? [5:16] You know the question there is different for many of us because many of you are looking [5:21] for life where there is only death. [5:25] And these people were looking for a dead body, but they had news for them, he’s alive. [5:33] He is not here, but he is risen. [5:36] Remember how he told you while he was still in Galilee?

[5:39] And I love this part because the angels kind of rebuke them. [5:41] It’s kind of a Jesus juke right at the resurrection. [5:45] Where they look to him and say, why are you here? [5:47] Shouldn’t you know better than to look for the dead body of Jesus? [5:51] He told you he was going to rise from the dead while he was still in Galilee, that [5:57] the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and

[6:03] on the third day rise. [6:05] And they remembered his words. [6:10] And returning from the tomb, they told all these things to the eleven and to all the [6:15] rest. [6:15] Something happened in that moment where they remembered his words. [6:20] I think what happened was that their knowledge of who Jesus was went from, I agree you’re

[6:26] the Son of God, to I have faith that you’re the Son of God. [6:30] I think there are many people in this crowd that you agree that he’s the Son of God, but [6:33] you don’t have any faith that he’s the Son of God. [6:36] And what’s the difference? [6:37] And that’s a little bit of what I want to talk about today is the difference between [6:41] you simply having a mental agreement about the facts of Jesus Christ and you actually

[6:46] giving your life to Jesus Christ. [6:49] Because when it says they remembered what he told them, that’s the moment that their [6:55] faith went from a physical agreement, yes I think that he is the Son of God. [6:59] There’s something significantly special about Jesus Christ to the point where they said, [7:04] Good night, he has risen from the dead, he is God. [7:12] Number one this morning, you have to understand why Jesus was in the tomb in the first place

[7:16] and that is because Jesus died for your sin. [7:20] Jesus died for your sin. [7:23] You see the resurrection is of such great consequence because nobody works like that, [7:28] nobody comes to life after they died under their own power. [7:32] But you have to understand it’s greater than just Jesus giving us this amazing picture [7:38] of his deity.

[7:39] There was a purpose behind the resurrection that can only be seen when you understand [7:44] his death. [7:46] Because Jesus died for your sin. [7:48] Jesus lived a perfect life. [7:51] Jesus did not have sin of his own to die for. [7:54] Romans 6, 23 tells us a very important statement.

[7:57] It says that the wages of sin is death. [8:01] And without Jesus that’s all you have. [8:04] You have that first sentence. [8:06] But when you look to Jesus on the cross, you have a purpose filled death to deal with [8:12] the reality of your sin. [8:14] And if it’s one thing that you have to admit, it’s that this world has pain.

[8:21] This world has evil. [8:23] It has pain inside of us. [8:25] If you’re not dealing with pain right now, I’ve got a little bit of bad news. [8:28] There’s going to come a point probably in the near future where you have to deal with [8:32] real pain in your life. [8:34] But there’s also evil outside of ourselves.

[8:37] Just this morning I saw in the news where in Sri Lanka, Christians were gathering to [8:44] celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and a coward put a bomb in the auditorium [8:49] that they were in and probably hundreds of people are dead. [8:54] See, you can’t deny evil. [8:57] That’s evil. [8:59] That’s wickedness on full display.

[9:02] And you have to admit that this world is filled with pain. [9:06] And even though you may not understand why behind pain, you understand the realness [9:12] of pain in your life and in the lives of other people. [9:17] Because the reports come in weekly, if not daily, if not hourly, that this world is not [9:25] what we want it to be and it is not what it should be. [9:31] There’s a longing inside of every one of our lives for something better, for something

[9:37] more peaceful, for something righteous, for something that gives life rather than takes [9:44] life. [9:45] And I will tell you that the only thing that I have seen under the sun that can accomplish [9:50] such a feat is a sinless savior laying his life down to pay the penalty for your sin. [9:59] That is exactly what 1 John 2 says Jesus did. [10:03] Tells us that he came to be the way from the wrath of God for sin to the favor of God by

[10:12] paying the penalty for your sin so that you can be forgiven. [10:18] But here’s the fact, if all Jesus did was died, it’s not really of that much consequence. [10:26] Millions of people have died.

[10:30] Thousands of great people, heroic people have died. [10:36] But none of them have ever risen from the dead. [10:41] Number 2 this morning, Jesus physically rose from the dead. [10:47] Now I purposefully put that term physically in the phrase because I want you to understand [10:54] that it wasn’t just a spiritual resurrection as some might say. [10:59] It was a literal physical resurrection which is by all standards impossible.

[11:04] I know. [11:06] It’s insane to think when someone dies, a few days later they’re going to get up. [11:13] And I also want you to understand that they didn’t just think he was dead, put him in [11:18] the grave. [11:18] Because isn’t this the great fear? [11:21] That they’re going to thank you’re dead, they’re going to put you in a casket, they’re going

[11:24] to bury you and then you’re like wait a second I wasn’t dead and you come out of your comatose [11:27] state. [11:28] Alright, that’s not your great fear? [11:31] Oh, okay. [11:31] Well I’m just a weirdo then. [11:32] But Jesus was really dead and we know this because historically speaking he was executed

[11:41] by the government of Rome. [11:42] And Rome had gotten execution down to a science at that point and they had professional executioners. [11:50] And what these men were, their full time job was killing criminals. [11:55] So much so that they developed a death certificate similar to what we have. [12:00] And so these men, if they didn’t complete the task and they said this guy is dead when [12:06] he was not dead, then it wasn’t just that they lost their jobs in embarrassment, no.

[12:12] The actual rules were those guys were to be killed if they got it wrong. [12:17] Because Rome wanted to make sure that their executions worked. [12:21] And so Jesus’ certificate was signed, Jesus’ death was pronounced, the professional executioner [12:26] said he is dead. [12:27] They put him in a tomb in fearing that his grave would be robbed. [12:32] They rolled the stone over it, they posted guards in front of it.

[12:38] This guy was dead. [12:41] Yet these women, fully thinking they were going to hide the stench, show up and he’s [12:49] gone. [12:51] More so angels appear and say why do you seek the living among the dead? [12:55] He is alive just like he told you he was going to be alive. [13:00] He did that to prove his power over sin and death.

[13:08] First Corinthians 15 says something very interesting in this passage. [13:12] He says, I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for [13:17] our sins in accordance with the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on [13:20] the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas. [13:24] Now Cephas was just another word for Peter. [13:27] Then to the 12th.

[13:29] Then he appeared to more than 500 brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, [13:35] though some have fallen asleep, that just means they died. [13:38] Then he appeared to James, then to all of the apostles. [13:41] Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. [13:46] And so Paul states something here, he says the most important thing that you can understand [13:50] is that Jesus died, he was buried, and he rose from the dead.

[13:54] That is of first importance to every single person. [13:59] The reason that he includes buried was because he wants an emphasis put on he was really dead. [14:04] He wasn’t just in a coma. [14:06] He was dead dead. [14:08] Really, really no heartbeat dead. [14:11] But then he says he also rose from the dead.

[14:14] But then he gives us three key historical arguments for the death of Jesus. [14:19] Now some of these are circumstantial. [14:22] When you add them all up, it demands a verdict from us to say, did this really happen? [14:29] The first one that he points out is the testimony of the disciples, whose lives were completely [14:34] changed by the resurrection. [14:36] Now if you’re pulling off a con, most of the time what you’re going to do is if it’s a

[14:42] huge lie, and you’ve even got some buddies in on this lie, you are going to paint yourself [14:47] as the hero of the story. [14:48] And what I find fascinating about the Gospel accounts is that the disciples do not do that. [14:54] The disciples record themselves as bumbling fools in the life of Jesus Christ. [15:01] I mean they were dumb. [15:02] Jesus is constantly rebuking them, saying you do not get what I am doing.

[15:06] One time he rebuked Peter to the extent where he called Peter Satan. [15:10] And he said get out of my way Satan. [15:13] Now how would you like the Son of God comparing you to his arch nemesis? [15:16] Alright, that’s about the greatest insult you can possibly get. [15:20] But the disciples were foolish, but more than that, they were cowards. [15:26] When Jesus was arrested, when he was unjustly tried, and when he was beaten mercilessly

[15:33] by the Romans, where were the disciples? [15:37] They were hiding. [15:39] Because they were afraid. [15:41] Peter even went so far as to try to change his identity.

[15:47] He is questioned by a crowd. [15:49] He says, oh wait, aren’t you one of the people that were following Jesus? [15:53] Denied it three times, because he was so afraid.

[15:59] And around a month or so later, that same Peter stood before the very same crowd [16:07] that said, crucify him. [16:10] And said, this Jesus whom you crucified, rose from the dead.

[16:20] And then soon thereafter the government arrested them and said, you cannot spread this. [16:25] You cannot come against the government with such an accusation that someone that we killed [16:30] has risen from the dead. [16:32] And then they beat them, and then they beat them again. [16:34] And they said, do not testify again in his name. [16:38] And those same disciples who were cowards, who were hiding, who were afraid, they looked

[16:44] at those officials and they said, you can do to us whatever seems right to you, but [16:49] we must testify of the name of Jesus, because we serve a law greater than yours.

[16:57] These fearful cowards were changed by something.

[17:05] Something happened in their lives where they were fearless. [17:09] Something happened in their lives where they were not afraid of death. [17:16] Because most of them were killed, because they wouldn’t stop proclaiming the gospel. [17:21] The same Peter who denied the name of Jesus while he was being unjustly tried. [17:27] When faced with execution, when Rome told him, if you keep preaching in the name of Jesus, [17:32] we’re going to kill you the same way we killed Jesus, he looked to them and he didn’t say,

[17:37] okay, I’ll stop, I’m afraid. [17:39] No, he looked to them and he said, that’s fine, but do me a favor, don’t kill me the [17:44] same way you killed Jesus, because I don’t deserve such dignity. [17:48] Turn the cross upside down, because I deserve a worse death than my Savior.

[17:55] You have to grapple with those changed lives. [17:59] But more than that, you have to deal with the eyewitness accounts. [18:05] Peter writes to these people, a few years removed, he writes to the church at Corinth, [18:09] and he says, don’t fear death, because on the other side for the follower of Jesus, [18:13] there’s resurrection. [18:14] And if you don’t believe in the resurrection of Jesus, I will take you to the house of

[18:18] a few hundred people who spoke to him, who touched the nail scarred hands, who maybe [18:26] had pancake breakfasts with Jesus after he rose from the dead. [18:31] That’s what I would do.

[18:36] But here’s the deal, if you rob a bank and you’re foolish enough to do it without a [18:42] mask, and a few hundred people see you do this, and the DA, the district attorney comes [18:49] in front of you and says, here’s the deal, we’ve got 500 eyewitness accounts, you’re [18:54] going to want to take the plea bargain, because you’re sunk, you’re in trouble.

[19:01] That’s what Paul is doing, he’s saying, yeah, it’s been a few years and some of them have [19:04] died, but I have hundreds of people that saw him. [19:08] You have to deal with that. [19:11] In fact, you also have to deal with the local origin of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. [19:17] You see, most tall tales, most fairy tales, they begin in a far off land many years ago, [19:23] or maybe it fits this culture to say, in a galaxy far, far away.

[19:28] All right. [19:29] I mean, some of y’all really got excited this week, didn’t you? [19:32] That trailer came out and it was like a second salvation for some of you. [19:36] Now here’s the deal, my son is like that, but he’s nine. [19:41] Some of y’all are like 40. [19:43] I don’t know what that says about you or doesn’t say about you.

[19:47] I just know maybe you need to find a hobby. [19:51] I don’t know. [19:52] You’re like, I have. [19:55] No, you haven’t.

[19:57] But the origins of the resurrection story were local. [20:03] The origins of the resurrection story were in the same city about a month removed where [20:09] Peter stands up and he says, here’s what happened. [20:12] And it says thousands of people believed the resurrection of Jesus Christ. [20:17] And these were the very same people who stood before Pilate. [20:21] What did they say?

[20:22] Crucify Him. [20:24] Crucify Him. [20:25] The same people said, and they did, yet He lives.

[20:33] And then in just a few months it spread to the local area and thousands and thousands [20:39] of people believed. [20:40] And then it spread in just a few short years to the entire known world at that time.

[20:51] Friends, there’s nothing I can do to ultimately convince you to put your faith in Jesus Christ. [20:58] But I can tell you one thing is for certain, that you believe some things that you were [21:10] not able to believe. [21:10] There is more historical evidence than the resurrection of Jesus Christ has. [21:15] There is evidence of the resurrection that demands a verdict from you. [21:19] And here’s the key.

[21:20] There is enough historical evidence of a risen Jesus Christ for it to be historic fact.

[21:30] There’s evidence that demands a verdict. [21:31] And it demands a verdict for more than just agreement. [21:36] Because if Jesus rose from the dead, He is God. [21:42] And everything about Him is true. [21:45] See, that’s the application. [21:47] That’s how you move from agreement to faith.

[21:51] Because if He rose, He is God. [21:54] And everything about Him is true. [21:56] The Bible is true if Jesus rose from the dead. [22:00] Salvation is real if Jesus rose from the dead. [22:04] He believed the Bible. [22:06] He created the world if He rose from the dead.

[22:13] He’s God. [22:15] But secondly, if He rose, Jesus has the power to save you from sin. [22:20] If He rose, Jesus has the power to save you from sin. [22:26] It’s not just potential.

[22:29] Because He actually proved that He has power over sin and death. [22:34] Because death has power over me. [22:36] That’s a great fear for most people. [22:39] The thing that they fear the most is their death for good reason. [22:41] There’s no coming back from that, is there?

[22:46] Unless somebody’s risen from the dead.

[22:50] No one has ever done that under their own power before, but Jesus Christ has done that. [22:55] But thirdly, He doesn’t just want to wipe the slate clean and give you a second chance at life. [23:01] Because here’s the deal. [23:03] If I got a second chance at life, if Jesus looks to me and says, [23:06] Steve, all your sins are forgiven. [23:09] Brand new life, you get a second chance.

[23:13] You know what I would do? [23:15] Blow it.

[23:18] Give me a second chance, give me a third chance, give me a fourth chance. [23:21] Man, I’m not perfect. [23:22] I don’t think anybody in here would be so arrogant as to say, I’m flawless. [23:27] Now, if you were given a second chance, you’d ruin it just like you did your first chance. [23:31] But if Jesus rose from the dead, He gives me more than a second chance. [23:35] He gives me a new life.

[23:36] More so, He gives you His life. [23:41] See, my life is not new, but given to me to live under my standards, under my righteousness. [23:46] No, Jesus makes a great exchange. [23:48] He takes my sin, which is all I have to offer, and He gives me His righteousness. [23:53] Therefore, I don’t have to live in shame. [23:59] I don’t have to live in guilt.

[24:01] Some of you are living in the memory of sin from years ago. [24:06] You are so ashamed. [24:08] You are so guilty. [24:09] You are afraid of people finding out what is true of you. [24:13] Therefore, you hide it. [24:15] Therefore, you cover it.

[24:17] You say, if they know, then they’ll never want me in their lives. [24:23] Friends, the good news of Jesus Christ is that He forgives you and gives you His righteousness. [24:29] Therefore, as I walk through this world, my life is not marked by the sin of Steve Gentry. [24:36] My life is marked by the righteousness of Jesus Christ. [24:40] And when I stand before God in judgment, which all of us will one day, [24:45] He will not look to me and say,

[24:47] Steve, you are unworthy. [24:49] Steve, you are no good. [24:51] Steve, you’ve sinned against me. [24:52] Steve, you’ve done this. [24:53] Steve, you’ve done that. [24:54] How dare you think you can be in my presence?

[24:56] Now, He will look to me and He will say, [24:58] My son’s righteousness is in your account.

[25:05] My life is marked by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. [25:09] It’s number three this morning. [25:11] Understand, Jesus wants to save you. [25:14] Jesus wants to save you. [25:16] Luke 24, 8 is very important. [25:20] It says, they remembered His words.

[25:23] They remembered what Jesus had said.

[25:26] I think that one of the things that they remembered is what Jesus said to a woman in John chapter 11.

[25:35] It says, I am the resurrection and the life. [25:38] Whoever believes in Me, [25:40] here it is, [25:41] though he die, [25:44] yet shall he live.

[25:49] Friends,

[25:51] without Jesus Christ, [25:54] all that you are facing [25:56] best case scenario [25:58] is a life that you make with your own hands [26:01] and a death [26:03] where you will be condemned by your sin forever.

[26:08] But Romans 6, 23 has a second half.

[26:11] See, without Jesus, all it has is the first half that says, [26:14] for the wages of sin is death, [26:15] but the second half in Jesus says, [26:18] but the free gift of God [26:20] is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. [26:25] You see, that is what Jesus wants to give you.

[26:29] That is what the resurrection proves to you. [26:34] But you cannot just say, [26:36] okay, that’s fine. [26:38] Jesus is wonderful. [26:40] Jesus is a great example for me to live by. [26:43] Now, as C.S. Lewis wrote in Mere Christianity,

[26:46] if He taught what He taught, [26:48] and He is not God, [26:50] then He is one of two things. [26:52] He is a liar you cannot trust [26:55] because He claimed to be God, [26:58] or He is a lunatic you don’t want to trust

[27:00] because He’s a nutcase. [27:03] But there is a third possibility.

[27:06] He is exactly who He said He is. [27:10] He is the Son of the living God. [27:15] And I tell you this morning, [27:17] if He rose from the dead, [27:20] that is exactly who He is.

[27:26] Sin brings death to life. [27:30] Excuse me, brings life. [27:31] No, brings death to life. [27:34] Sometimes I get backwards after three.

[27:38] But Jesus, see friends, [27:41] He brings life into death. [27:45] No one else can do that. [27:47] No one else has ever done that. [27:49] You have no hope outside of Jesus Christ.

[27:55] So ultimately, as the band makes its way up, [27:57] I want to tell you, [27:59] you have a choice to make.

[28:01] It’s the most important choice of your life. [28:03] And some of you in here, [28:04] I know you’ve already made that choice, [28:05] but there are people here, [28:07] because it’s Easter, [28:08] I don’t know you.

[28:09] And you don’t know anything about me, [28:11] and that’s fine. [28:12] But I want you to understand [28:14] that you have to, [28:15] at some point in your life, [28:17] make a choice.

[28:18] Is Jesus God? [28:21] Because if He is, [28:23] then yes, He rose from the dead, [28:25] and everything He says is true, [28:27] and He has power over sin and death, [28:29] and He wants to give you a new life,

[28:30] but if He’s God and you deny Him, [28:32] here’s the reality, [28:34] you are facing death with no hope. [28:37] That’s it. [28:39] But if you put your faith in Jesus Christ, [28:43] you are still going to face pain in this life.

[28:45] You are still going to have to face evil. [28:49] And yes, [28:50] just like Jesus said in John 11, [28:52] you will die.

[28:55] But the interesting thing about death [28:56] where the Christian is concerned, [28:59] death seems to have a hard time sticking.

[29:02] Because for the Christian, [29:05] though I will die, [29:07] Jesus has promised me something [29:08] that He backed up with His own resurrection. [29:11] And I believe this with no doubt. [29:14] I will live again.

[29:18] Because Jesus Christ [29:19] will give me new life in His kingdom. [29:23] But without Jesus, [29:25] there is only eternal condemnation. [29:28] So if you’re in here this morning, [29:31] and you need to trust Jesus Christ,

[29:33] here’s my plea to you. [29:35] Friend, turn from your sin. [29:38] Trust Jesus Christ, [29:40] and He will save you. [29:42] I’d love to talk to you about that after the service. [29:44] There are plenty of people that would.

[29:47] But this is between you and God. [29:49] But for the rest of you, [29:51] if you’ve put your faith in Jesus Christ, [29:54] I want you to understand that every single day [29:56] when you wake up, [29:56] you wake up to purpose.

[29:58] You wake up to life. [30:01] And you wake up every day [30:03] to look to God and say, [30:05] what evidence of the resurrection [30:07] being true in my life [30:08] can I live out today?

[30:12] And for all of you, [30:14] please stand. [30:15] And I want you to understand [30:17] that as we sing as Christians,
