[0:00] And he gives the Ten Commandments [0:03] And he says I have followed these and Jesus looks at him and says yes, but you lack one [0:11] thing [0:12] Says if you would be perfect [0:18] Sell all of your possessions and follow me
[0:24] And the scripture says that that the man just kind of looks at Jesus and his face becomes [0:30] downcast and it says he turns away and [0:35] He walks in the opposite direction of Jesus
[0:39] Because he has basically an unwillingness to do this and [0:44] Jesus then looks at his disciples [0:45] And he says it is harder for a rich man to enter in to the kingdom of heaven [0:53] than it is [0:55] For a camel to go through the eye of a needle [1:00] And then the scripture says that his disciples look at him and they’re astonished
[1:06] They say well Jesus who then can be saved [1:10] And it’s one of those section of verses that we look at and we’re like [1:17] What does that mean? Does this mean that I have to sell all my possessions that I’m not allowed to have anything? [1:24] There’s a pastor out in California [1:25] I heard him speaking one time and he said that he took this this section of verses so literally at one point that he [1:30] Actually sold his bed and for a period of two years
[1:34] He slept on the floor because he thought this is what God [1:38] Required of him for him to follow Jesus [1:42] And so the question that we’re kind of bogged down with today [1:45] Is that what this means is this what it means that the last will be first and the first will be last that we all [1:50] Have to be destitute that we all have to be poor in order to follow [1:54] Jesus and to some of us we would say yes, I hate rich people and
[2:01] To some of us we would say no I like my 401k
[2:06] And but we all find ourselves oftentimes looking at sections of scripture like this and we’re confused [2:11] Because it doesn’t seem to add up with other sections of scripture like in Ephesians when Paul writes that [2:19] salvation is by grace through faith and [2:24] That nothing is required of us and all is required of God [2:28] So why in the world is it that Jesus is looking at someone and saying do this and you’ll inherit eternal life [2:36] seemingly turning someone away
[2:40] The answer starts to unpack itself right after the disciples are astonished and asked Jesus who then can be saved [2:47] Because Jesus looks back to the disciples and he says yes this thing is [2:53] impossible [2:55] with man [2:57] But with God all things are possible
[3:05] And there of course we kind of [3:08] Scratch our chin and say well that sounds great [3:11] Still don’t know what he’s talking about and neither did the disciples, so don’t feel bad [3:15] Because Peter looks at Jesus, and he says oh, I get you Jesus look Jesus look at what we’ve done [3:22] We have done this we have left all of our possessions, and we are following you [3:29] Peter of course is kind of as he often does in the scriptures if you read through him
[3:33] He kind of puts his foot in his mouth a lot [3:34] And he’s very quick to speak and he speaks very quickly and says huh that rich young man [3:39] He didn’t get it, but I get it Jesus [3:41] I’ve done exactly what you’re talking about and Jesus looks back at him and at first it seems like Jesus is saying yes [3:48] Because he looks at Peter, and he says [3:51] Yes, you will inherit eternal life everyone that does these set of things will inherit eternal life and more than that
[3:58] He said you will rule [4:00] with me and [4:03] Then comes verse 30 that kind of throws everything kind of off balance for us because in verse 30 [4:09] He ends the statement by warning Peter with something
[4:15] Verse 30 he says but
[4:20] Many who are first will be last and the last first
[4:28] And oftentimes we just kind of glance over it and make it one of those token statements that we put on our [4:33] Refrigerator to remind us that we need to be humble and that we shouldn’t be prideful [4:39] The question that we have to ask ourselves is there anything wrong with what Peter said [4:45] What is Jesus actually talking about here in verse 30 [4:51] The big key that Jesus is actually starting to talk about and then he’s gonna unpack into verse chapter 20 [4:57] Excuse me is the fact that everyone
[5:00] Desires [5:02] To be accepted and valued [5:06] This is what Peter’s doing in this section [5:09] He’s saying Jesus [5:11] Look I have done this so you must then accept me, right? [5:16] I’m not in the same boat as this rich man, right?
[5:20] Because of look at what I have done [5:22] So Peter is looking to Jesus and saying Jesus, please accept me. Sorry about that [5:28] I am not like this rich young man. I want to be accepted [5:32] But Jesus then turns the table on him and gets to the very core of what he is actually [5:39] Doing and what he is actually saying [5:43] Jesus is saying to Peter Peter you are finding value
[5:49] In the exact same thing that the rich man is finding value in
[5:57] Think about what this rich man was actually doing [5:59] He comes to Jesus and he says I’ve been perfect [6:04] I’ve followed the law [6:06] Jesus says be careful because there’s one more thing that will give you perfection because you’re not quite perfect [6:10] Sell all of your possessions and the man turns away sad. Why did he turn away? [6:17] He turned away because his possessions were the things that defined his life
[6:25] It was what he valued and Jesus is confronting him with the very thing that he values [6:34] Jesus is saying you value your possessions you value your money more [6:41] Than you value the kingdom of heaven more than you value God [6:48] So first get that thing out of your life
[6:53] But you see the key is is that when Jesus rebukes Peter [6:57] He’s letting Peter understand something that it wasn’t the possessions [7:02] It wasn’t the material things that were the problem [7:08] Jesus was getting to the core of who Peter and the rich man actually were [7:15] He was getting to the root of [7:18] What they were looking for and that root of what they were looking for was self-worth
[7:25] It was how they were valued it was how they were accepted by everyone else [7:31] Because you see the rich man valued money so much and he valued his possessions [7:36] So much that it had become the thing by which he found value in himself [7:43] And if he had left his riches if he had left his possessions he would have been [7:51] worthless
[7:54] And Jesus looks at Peter and says be very careful [7:58] Because you’re treading on the same grounds as he was but with what you are sacrificing
[8:08] Jesus is saying the rich man valued his possessions therefore he found value for himself and his possessions [8:16] Peter you are finding your value in how much you are sacrificing [8:23] And you may ask me well how in the world do I know that [8:26] Let’s go on let’s see how Jesus unpacks this because Jesus doesn’t usually just have a statement like this and then just leaves [8:32] It totally open-ended it goes on join me in chapter 20 verse 1 [8:37] He ends chapter 19 with many who are first will be last and the last first
[8:41] Then in chapter 20 verse 1 he unpacks it the way he normally does with a confusing parable [8:47] so in verse 1 he says [8:50] For the kingdom of heaven is [8:53] Like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard [9:00] After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, which was the common wage back then [9:05] He sent them into his vineyard and going out about the third hour
[9:10] He saw others standing idle in the marketplace and to them [9:14] He said you go into the vineyard too and whatever is right [9:18] I will give you [9:19] So they went going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour he did the same [9:25] And about the eleventh hour he went out and [9:29] Found others standing and he said to them
[9:32] Why do you stand here idle all day? [9:36] They said to him because no one has hired us. He said to them you go into the vineyard, too [9:42] And when evening came the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman called the laborers and pay them their wages [9:48] Beginning with the last up to the first so let me unpack what is actually happening here [9:55] We have a man who is the head of a vineyard. He’s the master of the house. He’s the boss [10:01] He runs the entire vineyard of course vineyard grapes wine
[10:05] And he needs laborers so he goes to where the people who are looking for work stand in the morning [10:13] They would have in the morning [10:14] They would have a marketplace and in that marketplace anyone who was looking for work who needed money would go and stand there and [10:23] The masters of the houses and the foreman would go and they would ask people come work [10:29] And at the very beginning of the day he goes and he hires some people and he says if you come with me [10:33] I will pay you a full day’s wage
[10:36] Then three hours into the workday. He does the exact same thing [10:40] Then six hours into the workday he does the exact same thing [10:44] Then nine hours into the workday. He does the exact same thing they had long workdays back then I guess then 11 hours [10:52] Into the workday there’s only one hour left of work [10:56] He goes back and he hires the last people the remnant those who probably didn’t look that tough [11:04] He hires them and he says come and you will work an hour for me
[11:09] Only those at the beginning of the day does he actually say how much he’s gonna pay though [11:13] He says I’ll pay you a full day’s wage [11:15] And so this is where we find ourselves with all these people who have worked a different amount of hours for the exact same [11:22] master [11:24] Then look at what happens after he tells the foreman to gather them
[11:32] Verse 9 he says and when those hired about the eleventh hour came each one of them [11:38] Received a denarius [11:40] Remember from the beginning of the story a denarius was the full day’s pay
[11:47] And then he says in verse 11 [11:51] Excuse me not inverse 11 in verse 10 now when those hired first came [11:56] They thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius [12:03] And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house saying these last worked only one hour [12:11] And you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat [12:19] But he replied to one of them friend. I am doing you no wrong
[12:25] Did you not agree with me for a denarius? [12:30] Take what belongs to you and go I [12:34] Choose to give to this last worker as I give to you [12:40] Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me or do you begrudge? [12:49] my generosity [12:50] So the last will be first and the first
[12:56] Last he closes it with the very same statement that he ends chapter 19 with
[13:03] It has been said that this is one of the least preached on parables in the entire scripture very rarely [13:09] Will you go into a church or will you hear someone talking about this parable?
[13:15] This shouldn’t be that way though because what this parable does is it really gets to the core of how we see life [13:20] I understand why it’s not very much preached though because oftentimes when I read this parable I see it and I find myself [13:28] understanding the anger of those who had been there for 12 hours
[13:34] Imagine that you go to work [13:37] tomorrow morning and you get there at 8 a.m. And [13:42] You work from 8 to 5. You don’t even take a lunch break and then a co-worker shows up at 4 o’clock and [13:49] The boss looks at him right in front of you and says don’t worry about clocking in I’ll mark that you got here [13:54] At 8 and I’ll give you a full day’s pay I
[13:58] Don’t think that you would appreciate that I [14:02] Don’t think that you would be like well. That’s fantastic. We have a really good boss [14:06] He does stuff like that now. I’m pretty sure you would probably be irate [14:10] I’m pretty sure there would be something inside of you that would say this is not fair [14:15] Or if you’re a student in here you go and you have a 100 question [14:20] exam and
[14:22] You’ve studied for hours [14:25] And you show up and you have to answer all 100 from memory [14:28] And then another person shows up and the teacher gives them a different test with 90 of the questions [14:35] Already answered and they’re only responsible for the 10 easiest questions on the test
[14:42] I’m pretty sure you’d be irate everything inside of you would scream. This is unfair
[14:51] How dare you [14:53] I’ve worked all day long. I am exhausted my hands are tired. They’re cramping up [15:00] I’m filthy I’ve been working in a vineyard since 8 a.m. It’s now 8 p.m. I’m [15:07] Covered in dirt. I’m covered in mud this guy has only been here an hour [15:11] He barely had time to even get out into the vineyard, and you’re going to pay him the exact same wage that you’re going to pay me [15:20] I
[15:20] Think the Union would go on strike
[15:29] This cuts to how we see justice how we view fairness [15:36] This cuts
[15:39] To how we determine our worth
[15:46] Jesus is looking at his disciples, and he is asking them. How do you determine your worth? [15:55] Because at the end of the day when all of those workers came you see these guys that had worked longer [16:01] They look at the foreman and say a very interesting play on words that Jesus uses [16:06] They look at the master of the house in the foreman and say you have made [16:12] these men equal to us
[16:18] We are more valuable than they are and you’re trying to pass them off as being as valuable as we are [16:27] They are not our equal
[16:32] And [16:32] Jesus is looking at his disciples and saying Peter [16:37] Be careful because you’re coming very close to saying that you are more [16:42] Valuable and you are worth more than this rich young man that just walked away
[16:49] Because that’s what Peter does Peter looks at Jesus, and he says Jesus I’m I’ve left everything I’m following you I [16:59] Have more stake in the kingdom right?
[17:04] Jesus warns him as to how he sees himself in the kingdom and how he sees himself as getting into [17:12] the kingdom of God I [17:16] Think we ignore this parable and we stay away from this parable because we don’t understand it [17:21] Because we have this mentality in our life. You know pull yourself up by your bootstraps
[17:28] Work hard earn hard
[17:32] You got to earn your keep in this life, and if you don’t earn your keep in this life [17:39] Then you just ain’t as good you aren’t as valuable
[17:45] We have to be very careful with this mentality though [17:48] Because while it might work on a job site [17:51] It very quickly can enter in to a job [17:56] relationship with God and our relationship with others and [18:01] Jesus is warning Peter saying do not let this mentality [18:06] Creep in to how you view yourself in comparison to how you view others
[18:12] Over the past few weeks. We have dealt with the issues of religion [18:16] hypocrisy and pride and [18:20] We have seen how with religion we try to earn our [18:25] acceptance with God and [18:28] With hypocrisy when when we can’t really earn that when we can’t be good enough when we find ourselves [18:35] bankrupt and sinful
[18:37] We just try to hide the ugly parts from everybody else and we try to pretty the outside up and we make ourselves [18:44] Hypocrites because on the inside we’re really ugly and we’re need of an inner cleaning. We’re in need of a [18:51] Transformation by God himself, but we don’t want anyone else to know that [18:56] then last week we talked about pride and [19:00] How we see ourselves often as being superior to others
[19:07] At the base of pride though is this thing called ego and
[19:13] This thing called ego is what produces pride and all ego really is if you get to the base [19:18] Definition of what ego is ego is how you define your worth in this life [19:24] Ego is how you find your value [19:29] Ego is an extension and really the foundation of pride and this story reflects the issues that we deal with in our ego
[19:40] That we oftentimes see ourselves as being more valuable than others in [19:47] Relation to God and even in relation to others
[19:54] But what is this story really about [19:58] First thing the story about is about is authority [20:03] This story is about how we define authority in our lives notice how the master of the house responds to [20:10] When the guys that have been there all day [20:13] Complain he looks at them and he says [20:18] Whose money is it?
[20:22] Who’s the boss
[20:25] Who has the authority here [20:28] Just take what I’ve given you and be thankful. I even hired you this morning [20:35] Because I did not have to
[20:40] See oftentimes in our relationships with God [20:44] and [20:44] How we try to have a relationship with God or how we even look at God and how we see God [20:50] We want to take authority from him and put authority into our [20:56] worth and say we [20:58] Get to define we get to determine who and how we earn
[21:05] Acceptance with God or we can even have the authority to say I don’t need acceptance with God [21:11] I don’t need acceptance with anyone [21:14] Jesus is cautioning Peter here saying Peter [21:17] It sounds like you are taking the authority in your own life to say that your sacrifice has earned you something
[21:27] When Jesus is saying I am the master I [21:33] Am the authority I do [21:36] With what I give what I want
[21:42] Because Peter was was kind of putting himself on a totem pole above the rich man
[21:51] It’s almost an exchange
[21:55] of [21:55] roles [21:56] Because typically we would see those with the power those with the wealth [22:01] They’re above those without it and Peter is now taking pride. He is now taking worth in [22:09] His sacrifice and in his poverty
[22:14] And Peter says you’re not going to find salvation in your poverty and in your sacrifice either
[22:23] Just like the rich man can’t find salvation in his riches you can’t find salvation in your sacrifice [22:31] And that is something that is so hard for us to accept
[22:41] Because it doesn’t seem fair
[22:45] When you sacrifice when you work hard
[22:51] And you are moral and you find righteousness [22:55] And you are doing everything that you see the scriptures telling you to do and then someone who has lived what you would classify as a [23:04] Despicable sinful ugly life is allowed to come [23:10] Into the kingdom of God
[23:16] That really cuts to the very core of [23:24] Who we are inside of the kingdom of God because we don’t see that as fair
[23:31] We have earned our way with God and they have not [23:38] So what is Jesus saying with his authority here?
[23:44] Jesus is saying Peter you have no say and who gets the kingdom of God I [23:54] Have say and who comes in to the kingdom of God [23:59] Jesus is telling him Peter if I want that rich man in the kingdom of God
[24:05] I’ll bring him into the kingdom of God remember at the beginning of the parable [24:10] What does Jesus say Jesus says the master of the house goes out and brings people into the vineyard [24:24] Jesus is telling Peter Peter you didn’t even bring yourself into the kingdom of God [24:30] Why do you think you’re earning your keep in the kingdom of God then
[24:39] Jesus is who brings people into the kingdom
[24:44] Not us [24:47] Jesus has authority not us
[24:53] So you [24:55] Can be prejudiced you can think that you are better than other people [25:00] You can put yourself in a position of superiority over other people [25:07] But what Jesus is saying right here is you are no better than that rich young man [25:15] Who refuses to let go of his riches?
[25:20] Because Peter you did not forgive yourself [25:22] You did not save yourself I did
[25:29] Jesus is equaling the playing field here not by saying everyone’s equal therefore everyone’s in the kingdom of God [25:36] No, Jesus is saying Peter. It’s not about you. It’s about me [25:41] I’m the master of the house [25:44] You are not [25:46] So how dare you?
[25:50] Try to say you earned your way into my kingdom
[25:56] This story is also about grace [26:00] The big thread that goes through this story is the fact that those [26:05] Who had worked and toiled and earned all day? [26:11] At the end of the day were equal to those [26:16] Who had only been there an hour [26:18] I ask you this what if the story had been different?
[26:23] What if the story had been told from the perspective of those who had only been there for one hour
[26:30] How much different do you think that the story would have been? [26:34] What do you think their reaction was to the fact that they only worked one twelfth of an entire day? [26:40] But were paid for an entire day [26:44] What if you were the person that went to work tomorrow [26:48] seven hours late and [26:51] Your boss told you I’ll mark it that you came in at 8 a.m
[26:56] How thankful would you be if you were on the receiving end of such an amazing gift?
[27:07] Be far different [27:09] Working one hour is better than working eight hours [27:13] Is it not?
[27:17] Some of you may look at the boss say oh, no, I couldn’t accept such a gift [27:21] I’ll be honest with you. I could accept such a gift [27:25] I would gladly let him mark me down as coming in at 8 a.m. I mean, he’s the boss, right? [27:33] See the story is about grace the story is about getting something that you don’t deserve [27:37] This story is about how those who have been in the kingdom of God for a long time [27:44] Sometimes see those who have not been in the kingdom of God for a very long time
[27:52] See if you put yourself in the shoes if you’re someone that’s been there since 8 a.m. [27:56] Seeing people come in all throughout the day your number one saying well [28:01] There’s a lot of more people here working, but you’re also probably distancing yourself saying [28:06] I’m not one of those new people. Oh [28:09] Man, we’re probably gonna get overtime. Oh [28:13] Man look at those newbies
[28:15] Look at those rookies [28:17] They don’t know anything about tending a vineyard like we know it [28:23] We’ve been here for hours longer than they have
[28:29] Then at the end of the day who’s the great equalizer
[28:33] The master of the house
[28:38] The master of the house says you all get a full day’s wage
[28:45] And he ends it at the end of this at the end of the story he says
[28:52] Do you begrudge me?
[28:56] To give graciously
[29:01] Because that’s what they’re doing [29:03] They’re saying God he doesn’t deserve as much grace [29:06] as I do
[29:09] He didn’t work as hard as I do he doesn’t know as much as I do and this is often how we see [29:16] Church and how we see our faith in Jesus and how we work with people [29:23] Because the story is about judgment excuse me the story is about authority this story is about grace [29:29] This story is about the gospel
[29:34] Because if the truth be told in our lives we struggle day in and day out [29:41] to really believe the gospel of Jesus Christ [29:45] We struggle to accept this truth that someone came that God actually became man [29:54] and God took the sins of [29:57] Everyone onto himself at the exact same time all of us [30:02] All of my sin all of the sin of someone who has done less
[30:08] Sin than me and all of the sin of someone that has done more [30:13] Sin than me he took it all [30:17] onto himself
[30:22] Not saying now all of you are equal [30:26] But rather saying now all of you are in [30:32] me
[30:36] Because that we all have this temptation to make the gospel about us [30:42] To make Jesus all about us [30:46] We even sometimes sing songs, you know he thought of me above all
[30:57] Almost having the temptation to say that Jesus is about me [31:06] God is about me [31:09] And when we walk that path [31:12] It very quickly says I am better
[31:21] When in fact Jesus came to the world [31:23] He came to actually say the opposite
[31:27] You are not better [31:32] Jesus is
[31:35] You are not righteous [31:39] Jesus is
[31:43] And he dispenses an undeserved gift of himself [31:51] To all who will believe to all who will trust [32:00] The stories about gospel [32:03] And the gospel is that Jesus must define our worth [32:10] The key is in realizing that doing all of those things did not earn Peter anything his sacrifices did not earn him things
[32:21] He sacrificed [32:23] Because he was already a member of the kingdom and how do members of the kingdom act? [32:31] They act like Jesus not to earn Jesus, but because Jesus has already given all of himself to them [32:41] So how does a follower of Jesus act in the vineyard a follower of Jesus in the vineyard? [32:48] See someone new come into the vineyard someone who has never been there before [32:53] Someone who has not worked as long as he has and grabs them by the arm and says you come here follow me
[33:01] Watch me tend these grapes watch me wash these grapes watch me cut these vines [33:07] Watch me turn this dirt watch me work and I will help you learn how to be a member of the kingdom of God [33:17] You have not been here as long as I have but guess what it’s not about me it’s not about you it’s all about Jesus
[33:29] Let’s build a community of people who are all members of the same kingdom [33:37] All equal in Jesus not in us
[33:46] And those who have been in the kingdom for years and are comfortable in the kingdom [33:52] Can grab a hold of those that walk into the kingdom just realizing and just accepting their significance [34:00] That is found only in Jesus and helping them with the baggage that they bring with them [34:08] Helping them let go of it helping them learn helping them grow [34:14] Because I don’t know if you have noticed if you are already a follower of Jesus [34:18] There is a lot to learn because this pathway is hard
[34:25] Jesus himself said that hard is the road and narrow is the road that leads to the kingdom of God
[34:38] And as long as we have the attitude of those who are in the vineyard all day [34:44] Those who are saying I am better than those people that struggle [34:49] I am smarter than those people that don’t understand the Bible as much as I am [34:54] I am better because I work harder I am moral [34:57] As long as we have that attitude we are still not giving the authority to the one who has the authority [35:07] Because it has always been about Jesus
[35:10] It always is about Jesus and it will always be about Jesus
[35:18] If you look on our website our motto here at the village is that we are changed people [35:27] Changing people through Jesus
[35:32] Because we realize we didn’t change ourselves [35:37] Jesus did [35:40] We realize that we can’t change anybody else [35:45] Only Jesus can [35:48] Because in Galatians 2.20 I finished with this [35:53] It says that I am crucified with Christ
[35:59] I no longer live
[36:04] But Christ lives in me [36:09] And the life I now live [36:12] I live by faith in the Son of God [36:16] Who loved me and gave himself for me
[36:26] The question is today for you [36:32] How do you find your worth? [36:35] Are you finding your worth as a person in all that you do [36:38] In all that you have built up in the kingdom that you have built by your hands
[36:47] By you being better than others or having contempt for others
[36:54] Or are you living in a kingdom that was built by Jesus’ hands [37:00] The cross, the resurrection [37:05] 2 Corinthians 5.21 says [37:08] He who knew no sin became sin [37:15] So that we might have the righteousness of God
[37:23] You want to talk about unfair?
[37:27] That’s unfair
[37:32] But he did it anyway [37:34] And he does it anyway [37:36] And he continues to do it [37:40] The question that you might ask yourself is [37:43] How do I get into the kingdom of God?
[37:46] You can’t [37:47] There is nothing you can do
[37:51] The question you need to ask is
[37:55] Has Jesus brought me into the kingdom of God? [38:00] Because as long as you try to earn your way into the kingdom of God [38:03] You will never get in
[38:09] Jesus will gladly
[38:13] Freely [38:15] Graciously [38:17] Lovingly [38:18] And sacrificially
[38:22] Bring you in by His own works [38:27] By His own sacrifice [38:29] By His own death [38:32] And by His own resurrection [38:35] He brings you in [38:36] He clothes you with His righteousness
[38:39] He forgives you of all of your sins against Him [38:45] And He says, welcome
[38:49] Now be a member of my kingdom
[38:54] There are no perfect people in the kingdom of God
[39:00] There is only one perfect Jesus [39:04] In the kingdom of God [39:07] Life is all about Him
[39:13] You can have that life today [39:15] Let’s pray [39:19] Father [39:21] We come before you right now
[39:26] God I just want to thank you
[39:31] You came [39:34] You lived [39:36] You died [39:38] And you rose again [39:40] To bring us into your kingdom [39:43] And sometimes we find ourselves
[39:46] Seeing our lives as laborers [39:48] Earning our wage [39:50] And earning our keep with you [39:52] Losing sight
[39:55] Of whose kingdom it actually is
