[1:38] You [1:38] If you have your Bibles go ahead and open them up to first Corinthians chapter 15 [1:44] We’re starting a new series today and the series is called life [1:49] Over the next few weeks. What we’re gonna be doing is we’re gonna be unpacking. What does it look like? [1:56] To believe that Jesus rose from the dead. What effect does that have on each and every day? [2:05] So over the next nine weeks
[2:06] What we’re gonna do is we’re gonna unpack the meaning of different words [2:09] That are involved in living as one who knows that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead who knows what it is to experience [2:17] the power of new life in Jesus Christ and [2:21] Today where we wanted to start is we wanted to start by talking about a real life because ultimately that’s what we believe scripture [2:28] Unfolds that the resurrection gives each and every one of us having a real life is something that we all [2:36] Hopefully will attain to someday from very early on as children
[2:40] We understand that someday we’re gonna have to go out into the real world and live a real life [2:45] You grow in knowledge experience and hopefully ability and then one day you’re ready [2:50] You’re ready to go out there and you’re ready to live a real life [2:55] But every once in a while [2:57] Maybe you question like me if you’re living the life that you should be living ever been told by anybody that you need to get [3:04] a life
[3:05] Every once in a while [3:06] Maybe we stick our nose somewhere where we shouldn’t and someone says really is probably the most [3:11] disrespectful thing that that I think I could hear is is to be told that I need to get a life because what that [3:17] Tales is that the one that I’ve got isn’t real the one that I’ve got isn’t good enough because it gives me way too much time [3:25] To look into the lives of others [3:27] But what’s even worse than that is when maybe you wake up in the morning you look in the mirror and you tell yourself
[3:33] To get a life [3:34] Maybe you’ve been there [3:36] I know I have that you begin to question every single decision that you’ve ever made that has gotten you to the point that [3:43] Right there in that moment and you ask yourself am I living a life [3:50] that even matters I [3:53] Think one of the greatest fears that a lot of us have is that we’re gonna get to the end of our days here on earth
[3:58] When our bodies are weak and we know that our time [4:01] Isn’t very much in front of us and we wonder have I wasted it [4:06] Have I wasted my life and I think the fear that most of us have is that we’re gonna get to the point [4:12] Where we look back and we say maybe I have [4:15] Maybe the things that I’ve been living for haven’t really mattered because ultimately it’s only led me up to this point [4:21] And frankly, that’s why Easter is so important
[4:24] That’s why the life of Jesus Christ is ultimate because what Jesus means and what he did when he came to the earth is [4:32] He defined for us what a real life was and he came with one [4:39] Overarching reality and that is that everyone in this world [4:43] No matter who you are [4:44] No matter where you’ve come from each and every one of us can have a real life a life that matters a [4:53] life that’s not wasted a life that’s
[4:55] meaningful a life that can impact not only you but every single person around you and [5:02] Ultimately what Jesus told us is that if we follow him our lives will matter to the ends of the earth [5:08] That what we believe and what we do can actually serve to impact the entire world [5:16] But it comes from understanding that a real life is not about something that you will do [5:24] Real life is not about what you’re gonna earn [5:27] Real life is not about what you’re gonna accomplish
[5:30] Real life is not about how much power you have how much wealth you can amass how much material gain [5:36] You can surround yourself with how much fame that you can get in this life [5:41] Real life’s not about what you do [5:44] Real life is about a person that you find [5:48] Real life is about understanding the meaning of this day that we celebrate on the calendar real life is about [5:55] understanding the resurrection of Jesus Christ
[5:59] He had ultimate power [6:02] And he set it all aside and he came on a mission in this world to save each and every one of us [6:10] And someone that knew all about that was the Apostle Paul and here’s what he writes in first Corinthians chapter 15 [6:16] Now I would remind you brothers of the gospel. I preach to you which you receive in which you stand and [6:24] By which you are being saved if you hold fast to the word. I preach to you unless you believed in vain [6:31] For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures
[6:39] That he was buried that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures and they appeared to Cephas [6:46] Then to the 12 then he appeared to more than 500 brothers at one time most of whom are still alive [6:54] Though some have fallen asleep [6:57] Now number one this morning [6:59] I want to start by unpacking the reality that real life is all about Jesus because he rose from the dead [7:07] Paul starts this entire section of scripture this entire chapter of first Corinthians 15
[7:13] Which is all about why the resurrection is the most important thing in your life the most meaningful thing [7:19] That you can ever be a part of and he tells us in verse 3 [7:23] When he jumps off of verse 1 where he says now I would remind you he tells us for I’ve delivered to you as a first [7:29] importance [7:30] He wants us to understand that if we’re going to build a life that matters in this world that it has to first [7:36] Be on top of a solid foundation
[7:38] It has to first be on top of the most important event in the history of the world the most important thing that has ever [7:45] Happened on this earth and that is the life death and resurrection of Jesus Christ [7:51] And when he says he delivers it of first importance what he’s telling us is is that if we miss that [7:57] If we go past that thing if we build life on anything else we have missed it Paul writes that the most [8:04] Important thing in your life that you can build on your life on is not something that you do [8:10] But rather it’s something that you receive
[8:14] Know what he says in verse 1 says I would remind you brothers of the gospel. I preach to you which you
[8:22] Received [8:22] So one of the most important things that we understand about why we’re dissatisfied in life is because each and every day we pour [8:29] ourselves out [8:31] Basing who we are basing what we’re worth basing how we find our value on things that we do [8:39] Maybe on things that we know maybe on things that we accomplish [8:43] But Paul wants us to understand that it’s not about that
[8:47] It’s about something that you receive it’s about something that someone else has done something that you cannot earn [8:54] Something that you cannot hope to do and that is what Jesus Christ himself accomplished and that is rising from the dead [9:02] No matter how much I work no matter how much I earn no matter how much prominence that I gain in this life fame power [9:10] wealth I’ll never have [9:13] That kind of value [9:14] I’ll never have that kind of worth. I’ll never be able to accomplish a feat like that
[9:22] Toward Jesus after dying [9:25] Physically under his own power as God rose from the dead and Paul knew something about [9:33] Value because this is a man that before he wrote this he had experienced the greatest gains where fame was concerned in Israel [9:41] He’d experienced the greatest wealth of being one of the most prominent leaders [9:45] He had gained much and then in the book of Philippians [9:48] He turns to it all and he says I count all of that stuff that I had ever earned in my life as rubbish
[9:54] Compared to the overarching value of knowing Jesus Christ the worth of knowing the power of his resurrection is greater than anything [10:03] That he could ever earn and he has earned or had earned much [10:09] Paul knew value [10:11] Paul understood it all and he says nothing compares to that type of power [10:16] Nothing compares to that type of worth nothing compares to that type of hope because at the end of the day [10:23] No matter how much of yourself you pour out and how much you earn over your life span
[10:29] We all have one thing in common and that’s that one day. It will all be taken away from us [10:35] Whether you experience sickness whether you experience great pain whether you lose all of your money [10:41] One day you’re gonna lose everything in death [10:44] Because the one thing that each and every human on this earth does have in common is that we will not live forever [10:49] Will we know? [10:51] There’s going to come a day whether it be of old age whether it be of an accident whether it be of a tragedy
[10:56] Each of us are going to die and each of us have experienced that [11:03] Whether through a loved one whether through a friend [11:07] Whether through someone that was closer to us than anyone else in this world [11:11] We’ve all experienced that type of loss and in those moments we come face to face with the gripping reality of our mortality [11:20] Of the fact that this world and what we have will not last forever
[11:27] No matter what you do [11:29] Everything points to the truth that life begins to fade away [11:33] And that’s a truth that God lets us experience as we get older [11:37] I’m in my 30s and I’m already experiencing the loss of a lot of the physical gain that I’ve had in my life [11:43] As I’m sore in places that I never knew existed after raking leaves of all things [11:49] Maybe you’ve experienced that
[11:52] That health and life they’re fleeting things [11:55] Book of James says that it’s but a vapor and a mist [11:58] Fight fades away [12:01] 400 years before the death of Jesus the prophet Isaiah wrote about this reality [12:06] To the nation of Israel and a promise that God was making to each and every one of us in Isaiah chapter [12:14] 25 verse 8
[12:16] God writes through the prophet Isaiah that he God will swallow up death forever the Lord [12:21] God will wipe away tears from all faces the reproach of his people [12:25] He will take away from all the earth for the Lord has spoken then in chapter 26 [12:30] He unfolds how he’s gonna swallow up death when he says in verse 19 [12:34] your dead [12:36] shall live
[12:38] Their bodies shall rise you who dwell in the dust [12:43] Awake and sing for joy for your dew is a dew of light and the earth will give birth to the dead [12:51] Because of prophecies like this and others man has set out on a conquest to find immortality [12:59] Whether it’s in a diet pill or whether it’s in a mythical fountain of youth each and every one of us are looking to [13:05] Make our youth last as long as possible [13:08] When God himself said he’s gonna swallow up death forever
[13:12] He will make the dead to rise, but we’re scratching our heads saying God [13:16] How can we possibly get to a point where that’s possible? [13:21] Where we can make that happen what religion can we observe where we can gain that type of power? [13:27] And so for the next hundreds of years even to this day people have set out [13:32] How can we make this type of prophecy come to fruition because at the end of the day? [13:38] I think all of us can agree that to have that type of hope to have eternal life where death will be swallowed up forever
[13:45] We need two things [13:47] First we need relief from the curse of the pain of sin [13:53] Because we know that pain [13:55] Exists in this life, maybe you’ve hurt someone maybe someone has hurt you [14:01] Sin causes great pain and for us to have any hope in this life. We’ve got to lose that and then secondly [14:06] We need evidence to trust that something better is coming in the future
[14:12] Maybe you’ve lived enough days in this world to experience that there are more bad days than good
[14:19] That life can be very painful [14:21] And for us to have hope that death is swallowed up that death will rise to give life [14:28] We’ve got to have hope that we can trust it can’t just be some mythical reality [14:35] Some mystical experience some knowledge that we gain [14:38] There’s got to be evidence that something better is coming in the future whether it be in my life or after my life [14:45] Because the text says that even the dead will rise because of the hope that God is bringing
[14:53] But what no one ever [14:55] Realized is that God was actually telling us that something was going to happen that not you nor I [15:03] Are capable of making happen? [15:07] None of us would have ever believed that God was promising something that no mortal man would ever be able to gain [15:13] Why would God promise something we could never attain he promised it because he meant for himself [15:19] To come and deliver on that promise
[15:23] You see the text says starting in verse 3 [15:27] That there had to be death to defeat death in accordance with the scriptures [15:31] And then Jesus was going to rise in accordance with the scriptures see what Paul is telling us is that every promise that God [15:39] Made in Isaiah every promise that God made in the Old Testament [15:43] Every promise that God would make for all time was going to be contingent on one person and one person alone [15:50] Because of his great love for his creation it was going to be contingent on himself
[15:56] That he was the only person that ever had immortality [16:00] He was the only person that ever had perfection God is the only one who has ever had true righteousness that has [16:07] Absolutely no impurity in it and so he himself came down and lived on this earth first [16:14] experiencing everything [16:16] That we’ve ever experienced because of the curse of sin in this life [16:22] Friends you know Jesus experienced real pain in this world
[16:26] Do you know that Jesus experienced real suffering [16:30] Do you know that Jesus experienced everyone that he ever trusted everyone that he ever loved turning their back on him in his moment [16:36] of greatest need [16:37] Did you know Jerry Jesus experienced great suffering when he went to the cross? [16:43] Did you know his pain was real it was just as real as any physical pain that you’ve ever experienced [16:48] It was just as real as every moment of suffering that you’ve ever had in your life
[16:52] But the difference between Jesus and me is that Jesus experienced pain Jesus experienced betrayal Jesus experienced great loss in his life [17:01] But he never turned in a moment of despair and responded with sin [17:06] Jesus was perfect [17:08] Jesus was whole [17:10] Jesus in his pain never sinned not a single time [17:15] Because if he had he couldn’t do what I need most he couldn’t take away my sin
[17:21] He couldn’t take away all the things that caused pain in my life [17:26] You see for Jesus to go to the cross and pay the penalty for my sin and for your sin [17:30] He had to be someone who had absolutely no sin [17:33] Because if he had sin he would have been paying the price for his own [17:37] But instead he who knew no sin became sin so that we might become the very righteousness of God [17:43] And when Jesus went to that cross the purpose for his pain the purpose for his suffering is that he was on a mission
[17:50] To pay the price to pay the penalty for all sin for all time to make a way for us to have what is [17:58] Really life, but death was only part of it [18:02] For hope to be real [18:05] Jesus had to bring new life if Jesus had just stayed dead [18:11] Which there’s no argument about friends in history. We know that Jesus existed and we know that the Roman courts [18:18] Exiled him to death. They condemned him to death on the cross the worst death of all time
[18:25] But if he just stayed that way [18:27] We’d still be hopeless [18:29] You see verse 4 is the most important foundation upon which chapter 15 of 1st Corinthians is written [18:36] Because in that verse it says that not only did Jesus die [18:41] But Jesus rose from the dead [18:46] Jesus brought new life
[18:49] Jesus himself swallowed up death [18:54] Jesus himself made the dead to rise [18:58] Jesus himself fulfilled this promise when up from the grave [19:03] He arose three days after he gave his last breath on the cross and he walked out of a tomb [19:09] To new life that he wants each and every one of us to have this morning [19:13] And secondly this morning if Jesus rose from the dead if the resurrection is true friends that changes everything
[19:21] If there is someone that has the power to take death and make life out of it that changes history [19:28] That changes everything [19:31] And it did change everything for the disciples [19:35] Because what we see when we have these men and here’s why in chapter 15 [19:40] Verse 5 the text says he appeared he appeared to Cephas, which is Peter and then to the 12 [19:48] See he’s beginning to give us evidence
[19:51] He’s beginning to give us eyewitnesses people that actually saw Jesus [19:56] Risen from the dead because there was no argument in Rome whether or not Jesus died. He was crucified [20:02] Yes a professional executioner pronounced him dead then they raised him in a tomb then three days later people started saying that guy [20:09] He’s up walking around [20:11] People didn’t do that. They still don’t [20:15] Once you bury them, they’re gone
[20:17] But he says those 12 men they saw him [20:21] These are the same 12 who when Jesus was on earth they could not put two words together that made any sense [20:28] These were the 12 that kept footing that putting their foot in their mouths over and over and over again [20:33] These are the 12 that when Jesus would say to them the Son of Man must suffer many things [20:38] He must go to the cross. He must die so that he can rise again. These are the 12 that said Jesus [20:42] We don’t want you to do that. We’ve got other plans
[20:45] These are the 12 that as soon as the centurions came to arrest Jesus they ran like cowards [20:52] These are the 12 that when Jesus was on the cross [20:54] They spent the entire time in hiding or with cloaks over their head looking on from a distance as their Savior their King the one [21:01] Whom they had said you are God he died on a cross. They were cowards [21:05] These were not warriors [21:07] These were simple men who were overcome with fear in their lives
[21:11] But you know why Peter uses them as an example [21:14] Excuse me [21:15] Paul uses them as an example of people who saw him after he dead because of the radical change [21:20] That was caused in their lives. You see in John 2 22 [21:25] The Apostle John writes that when therefore he was raised from the dead his disciples [21:29] Remembered that he had said this and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken then in Luke 9 22
[21:37] They remembered that Jesus had said the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests [21:43] And the scribes and be killed and on the third day be raised [21:46] You see while they were walking with Jesus they had said many true things they had said you’re the Messiah [21:50] They had said you’re the Christ the Son of God [21:53] But what they did not understand until he had risen from the dead is what his mission was [21:58] You see they thought he was just there to set up a kingdom right there right now
[22:02] But we needed more than just a kingdom [22:03] We needed life and then once they had seen him risen from the dead the light bulbs went off [22:10] Everything made sense and you saw men go from cowards to warriors [22:15] You saw men who couldn’t put two words together go and confound the most educated people in the world [22:21] Because of how good their speech was because of how pointed their words were because their message was something that came with courage [22:28] They were now after they had run from being arrested
[22:31] They were running headlong into the courts counting in as praiseworthy that they were counted worthy to suffer for the gospel of Jesus Christ [22:39] A resurrection that they had feared wouldn’t come because of death now. They were proclaiming on every street corner [22:46] fearless [22:48] These were men who had [22:51] Encountered a risen Savior and it had changed not just a few things about them. It had changed [22:59] absolutely
[23:00] Everything about their lives it had changed [23:04] Everything but it wasn’t until he had rose from the dead that they knew what was going on [23:09] And it wasn’t until he had risen from the dead that all fear went away
[23:14] You know deep down I think the greatest fear that each and every one of us have is death [23:21] We do everything we can to avoid it and that’s what the disciples had done [23:26] But once they saw Jesus risen from the dead [23:31] They knew one important thing [23:34] Death didn’t need to be feared any longer because they knew the one who had power over [23:42] death
[23:43] He writes in first Corinthians 15 that this truth of the resurrection of Jesus Christ is something in which you [23:51] Understand in other words, it’s something that you live for it’s something that changes everything [23:57] It’s something that takes you and transforms the very reality of your life and that is what the disciples were [24:04] Experiencing they were standing in the resurrection every time they were arrested [24:10] They were standing in the resurrection when they went to the executioners [24:15] Did you know every single one of them ultimately died because they were preaching the resurrection of Jesus Christ?
[24:21] What would take these men who fled out of fear to facing death with absolutely no fear [24:28] Because they believed in the resurrection of Jesus Christ [24:32] You see first Corinthians 15 17 lets us know that without Jesus there is no hope [24:37] It detects says and if Christ has not been raised your faith is futile and you are still in your sins [24:42] But then first Corinthians 15 20 was what the disciples knew [24:46] They knew that in fact Christ has been raised from the dead the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep
[24:52] That term first fruits is very important for us because the disciples understood that Jesus was the first to rise from the dead [24:58] But he would not be the last
[25:03] Because after they saw the risen Savior [25:06] They remembered that in John chapter 11 verse 25 that Jesus had said something to a Samaritan woman that made no sense to them [25:12] at the time [25:13] Jesus had said to her I am the resurrection in the life whoever believes in me though [25:19] He died yet shall he live and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never [25:26] Die and then he challenges each and every one of us by asking do you believe this?
[25:33] Do you stand in it [25:36] Has it changed your life? [25:39] Has it transformed your fears into hopes? [25:43] Has it changed the life in which you stand right here and right now because once the disciples had seen him they remembered this [25:50] And they said Jesus is the resurrection in the life [25:52] We should not fear death because he will give us new life if we live for him
[26:01] Thirdly this morning a real life can only be lived for the God who has power over death [26:10] Did you know this morning that the author and creator of life wants to give you a real life [26:16] He wants to give you a life that matters. He wants to give you a life with power [26:21] He wants to give you a life in which all of your fears can be cast at the feet of a Savior who lives forever [26:27] He wants you to have the type of life with the type of power where you can face death head-on [26:33] Fearless because you know the one who has power over and he has promised to give it to you
[26:39] And that even if you die [26:41] It’s just the next step in you knowing and following and standing in the power of the resurrection of Jesus Christ [26:48] You see Paul wants us to understand that this reality of life in the resurrection [26:54] Isn’t just something that we agree happened one day and then we go on with life as usual [27:00] No, that’s not what Paul is talking to us about [27:02] He’s saying that it changes every moment of life that comes after it
[27:06] He said you receive it then you stand in it [27:09] And then thirdly he says in first Corinthians 15 to he says that you are being saved by it [27:18] It’s not just something that happens one moment and then you walk away from it [27:23] Now it’s something that changes your everyday [27:25] It’s something that you live in moment by moment. It changes the decisions that you make it changes the very course of your life [27:34] Because now if you trust in Jesus if you follow Jesus every moment every breath you take is now under the command of the most
[27:42] Powerful God in the entire universe Paul says we are saved by it and then we live for it [27:50] If our faith is real [27:52] You see right before Jesus left this world [27:56] He told us the disciples he said I’m going to come again. I [28:03] I want to spread all over the world and then I’m going to return and then I’m going to save all of you [28:09] I’m going to take you all to my presence forever and I’m going to establish my kingdom in this world
[28:14] But in Matthew 28 right before he left this earth. He gave us the three great realities [28:21] Of what faith and hope in the resurrection will give each and every one of us [28:27] See Jesus came to the mountain and he said to them all [28:30] Authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me go therefore and make disciples of all nations [28:35] Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit [28:38] Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you and behold
[28:42] I’m with you always to the end of the age [28:46] You see he gave them three truths of what it means to live for the resurrection [28:51] To live a real life in Jesus you have to have a new authority a new identity and a new mission [28:58] You see in verse 18 when it says he came to them [29:01] And he said all authority and heaven on earth has been given to me what he’s saying is is that in light of the resurrection [29:06] I need you to understand that I’m God I
[29:10] Need you to trust that I’m God because only God can do that [29:15] See if you trust in the resurrection you understand that you’ve come under a new authority [29:21] the old rules [29:22] Throw them out the window [29:24] The old authority that was over your life whether it be you or someone else it’s over because now there’s a greater authority [29:31] There’s Jesus the most powerful being that’s ever existed the one who spoke everything into existence
[29:37] He came he lived he died and he rose again and now we obey him as God [29:45] We trust and build our lives on and through him [29:50] But secondly it gives you a new identity [29:53] See our identity is so built around what we do [29:57] But the resurrection changes that [30:00] Through faith in Jesus our identity can be found in what Jesus has done and is doing in us
[30:07] Life stops being about me [30:09] Life starts being about him. That’s what faith says [30:14] My sins are no longer held against me my shame is not what determines my future [30:19] Not even my ability not my strength or lack of strength the thing that I identify [30:24] Myself by and determines every day in my life is Jesus [30:30] Because he paid the price for my sin and then rose again to give me a brand new life
[30:37] And then thirdly it gives us a new mission [30:41] Our mission is to make disciples of Jesus if we believe in the resurrection [30:47] You see we make disciples through our words and our actions [30:50] We live out the new life that Jesus gives and tell people about the resurrection of Jesus each and every day [30:56] We live for the same mission that he lived for for our life to be [31:01] Excuse me to come under his authority for our life to find hope in his identity
[31:06] And then for our life to have the same mission that his had to give people in the world [31:12] the good news that Jesus rose from [31:16] the dead [31:17] You know that when you trust in Jesus, that’s your purpose [31:22] He doesn’t just come to give us a fairy tale. He doesn’t just come to give us chicken soup for the soul [31:28] He doesn’t come just to make us feel better about ourselves. No, he comes to give us a new mission
[31:34] He comes to give us a life that is identified and determined by who he is what he has done and what he wants us [31:42] To do and he wants us to go out into the world around us and proclaim that Jesus is [31:48] Alive and Jesus is God and Jesus reigns and Jesus will return again to save [31:56] us if we trust in him [31:59] As the band comes up this morning. I want you to understand that you can live your life for something that will never fail [32:05] It’s something that’s eternal and it’s something that has a mission of great importance
[32:12] The resurrection of Jesus Christ isn’t just something that we tell ourselves to feel good about life [32:17] The resurrection of Jesus is something that gives us a brand new life [32:24] What I want to do this morning is maybe you’re in here [32:28] This is the first time you’ve heard it [32:31] Maybe this is the first time it’s made sense to you [32:34] Maybe this morning the scripture has been understood in a new way
[32:41] And you know that you need the new life in Jesus Christ friends, what are you living for?
[32:49] What are you finding your identity in is it by a past
[32:55] Maybe it’s a past marked with shame or maybe it’s a past marked with what you think is great gain
[33:02] Or maybe your future hope is just in what you can earn and what you can do [33:07] Friends if Jesus rose from the dead [33:10] Then what you need to understand right here right now this morning is that your past is on the cross with Jesus and [33:18] Your future should be determined by his resurrected life [33:23] And if that’s you this morning [33:27] I simply call you to do one thing
[33:30] And that’s turn from your sin and [33:33] Trust in Jesus Christ this morning [33:38] If that’s you in here this morning there will be some in the back there are some in the foyer [33:41] I’ll be right over there. I’d love to pray with you [33:44] I’d love to talk to you about the hope that you can have in Jesus [33:48] Or maybe you’re in here, and you know Jesus
[33:53] But you’re not under his authority this morning you’re struggling with your identity you’re struggling with doubt [33:59] You’re certainly struggling with living his mission [34:02] What I call you to do this morning is that when we stand to sing in just a moment sing a song of repentance
